History, Accomplishments and Public Policy Priority
After nearly a decade of work begun in 1991, the public education efforts of the Fairness Education Fund, in collaboration with the political activities and action of the Fairness Campaign, created real change in Louisville on January 26, 1999. On that day, Louisville became one of the first Southern cities to enact legislation prohibiting employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In October of that same year, Jefferson County passed a comprehensive civil rights ordinance prohibiting employment, housing and public accommodations discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Following the 2003 merger of the City of Louisville and Jefferson County, the Fairness Campaign and Fairness Education Fund worked once more to secure discrimination protection for Louisvillians when they prevented the sunset of the Fairness ordinance in the newly incorporated city.
In 2004, the Fairness Campaign worked in a statewide coalition to oppose the passage of a constitutional amendment in Kentucky banning same-gender marriage. Kentucky was one of eleven states that passed a
constitutional ban on marital equality during the 2004 Presidential Election.
Now, and in the immediate future, the Fairness Campaign is working with allies from across the Commonwealth to pass comprehensive statewide discrimination protection based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Each year, additional co-sponsors in the Kentucky legislature sign on to the proposed statewide Fairness law, and support continues to grow.
