October 14, 2011 - Attica Scott selected to replace Judy Green on metro council - Courier-Journal

Attica Woodson Scott, a 39-year-old community organizer with a 15-year career working on social justice issues, was elected Thursday night as the newest member of the Louisville Metro Council.  Scott, one of 13 candidates for the open District 1 seat, replaces Judy Green who was expelled from the council last month by a unanimous vote of her council colleagues.  Scott will represent the district for at least a year, until the public gets a say in picking a council member in the primary and general elections of 2012. She was elected by an 18-7 vote of the metro council.  Read more...

October 14, 2011 - Council Elects Attica Scott to Fill District 1 Seat - WFPL

The Louisville Metro Council elected Attica Woodson Scott to fill the District 1 seat by a 18-to-7 vote Thursday.  The 39-year-old community organizer currently serves as a coordinator for Kentucky Jobs With Justice, a grassroots organization that advocates on labor issues, economic justice and immigrant rights. Scott replaces former Councilwoman Judy Green, who was expelled from office for a series of ethical violations and misconduct charges.  Scott says she feels a need to serve at a higher standard due to that scandal, but that she is eager to take office and address the issues in the district.  Read more...

September 29, 2011 - GOP Group's Ad Criticizes Beshear on LGBT Support - WFPL

An outside political group is running a radio ad criticizing Governor Steve Beshear for once earning support from LGBT rights groups and for protecting state employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation.  The ad was paid for by the Restoring America Campaign Committee, which is also running television ads blasting Beshear on a number of issues and promoting GOP candidate David Williams.  “Williams believes marriage is a sacred covenant between one man and one woman,” says the ad. “Governor Beshear received the support of gay and lesbian rights organizations and has created special protections for gay and lesbian state employees.”  Read more...

September 29, 2011 - Galbraith on Education, Mountaintop Removal, Same-Sex Marriage and More - WFPL

Independent candidate for governor Gatewood Galbraith says he would support lifting Kentucky’s constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, but he won’t campaign on the issue.  In an interview with WFPL News, Galbraith said the issue is divisive, and he won’t make it part of his platform.  “I don’t even want to know. If people want to make that commitment to each other, that’s fine with me,” he says. “Right now we have a constitutional prohibition against it, if it comes down to a referendum, depending on the wording of the referendum, I could probably support it.”  Read more...

VOTE Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011 6 a.m.-6 p.m.

Fairness PACs Endorse Governor Steve Beshear for Reelection

In the race for Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the Fairness Campaign's Political Action Committee, C-FAIR, joins the Kentucky Fairness Alliance's FAIR-PAC in a unanimous joint endorsement of Governor Steve Beshear for reelection. After winning both the C-FAIR endorsement and the 2007 gubernatorial race, Governor Beshear soon proved that he was the public servant promised in his candidacy--one committed to fair and equal treatment of all Kentuckians. He reinstated the Executive Order rescinded by his predecessor that extended employment protections for Kentucky's state employees based on their perceived sexual orientation and gender identity.

Governor Beshear is supportive of the public universities that have chosen to extend domestic partner benefits, streamlined the process to restore voting rights to former Kentucky inmates, and is a strong ally of organized labor. But, equally as important, Governor Beshear has been a strong leader during these tough economic times. Though he has cut more than $1 billion from the state budget, he has protected education, Medicaid, and public safety programs from cuts and he is working to find jobs for all Kentuckians.

Governor Beshear shares a vision for our Commonwealth that gives every Kentuckian a chance to succeed and live a happy, healthy life. It is because of that vision and the actions he has taken in testament to his commitment to Fairness that C-FAIR and FAIR-PAC endorse Governor Steve Beshear with vigor.

Independent candidate Gatewood Galbraith also responded to the C-FAIR/FAIR-PAC questionnaire. While Mr. Galbraith indicated support of statewide anti-discrimination Fairness protections, his lack of campaign fundraising and ambiguous statements on other issues of importance made him a candidate not viable for the C-FAIR or FAIR-PAC endorsements.

Attorney General

Given the integral role Kentucky's Attorney General plays in upholding laws that protect our Commonwealth's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender residents, C-FAIR offers these profiles of the candidates running for that office though neither responded to the joint C-FAIR/FAIR-PAC questionnaire.

Attorney General Jack Conway, Democrat, Incumbent

Elected as the Commonwealth's Attorney General in 2007, Jack Conway has said publicly that he favors abortion rights during the first trimester of pregnancy, supports President Barack Obama's health-care reform bill, supported the end of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy on lesbian and gay service members, and supports expansion of the federal civil-rights law to add protections based on sexual orientation.

Todd P'Pool, Republican

Candidate Todd P'Pool has stated his overriding goal if elected will be to join the legal battle against President Barack Obama’s health care law. Mr. P’Pool has pledged to be a “pro-life” attorney general and to bring more “faith-based” solutions to problems such as drug addiction. He has won and accepted the endorsements of Kentucky Right to Life and the Louisville Tea Party.

No other candidate in any race returned a C-FAIR/FAIR-PAC questionnaire.

In a show of solidarity with the Berean effort to pass a local anti-discrimination Fairness ordinance, C-FAIR has made a financial disbursement to FAIR-PAC endorsed Guy Townsend for Berea City Council.
